Gavin Butler ​ BA(Hons) MSc DipAPI FHEA


Gavin Butleris currently an Associate Tutor for Silverback Security Academy, an External Tutor for Portsmouth University, an External Assessor for Leicester University and an External Examiner for the University of Chester.

Having spent 16 years at the University of Westminster and a further seven years at Bucks New University, Gavin now runs his own security consultancy company specialising in cyber resilience and risk, investigations and business continuity planning.

Gavin has a first degree in criminology from the University of Westminster (PCL) and a Masters (MSc) in Security Management and Information Technology from Leicester University. His commercial experience extends across museum security, retail security and working with organisations on cyber security training programme development. However, since 1994 he has also been lecturing extensively in Information Technology Security and was a leading academic on the MSc. programme in IT Security at the University of Westminster and later led the development of cyber security programmes at Bucks New University. Gavin is a qualified lecturer as a Fellow of theHigher Education Academy(HEA), he is also a qualified private investigator and has also tutored at Bramshill Police National Training Faculty. Gavin has a fine forensic detail for documentation having been the School Academic Conduct Tutor at the University of Westminster and the QA Faculty Coordinator at Bucks New University. Gavin has the distinct ability to blend and analyse genuine life experiences within an academic framework to provide real value for his tutees across different levels of courses.

Gavin is also known for the influential work on commercial burglary - 'Commercial Burglary: What Offenders Say' in Gill, M. (1994) Crime at Work, Leicester: Perpetuity Press.
